– I’d like to tell you about the time I went backpacking around Spain, I can’t quite believe it but it was over a decade ago now, Two friends and I got very good-value rail passes and travelled around Spain for three months. It was an unforgettable experience.

We started off in Madrid because that’s where we landed. We did some sightseeing –
we especially loved the parks – and we ate and drank lots – our favourite thing was, of
course, the delicious ham, We liked the nightlife in Madrid, too, not least eating out – it was a real experience. The locals don’t go out to dinner until really late, often as late
as 11 pm (I suppose because it’s so hotl! So if you turn up at a restaurant at what
would be a normal time where we come from, the place is either closed or completely
empty.

We then journeyed on to Santiago de Compostela in the north-west, which was fabulous,
and my friend is really into art so we had to visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in the north. The weather was dreadful while we were there so we didn’t get the best impression, but even so we enjoyed it. More people should visit that part of Spain.
Then we moved on to Barcelona, Madrid’s rival city. We fell in love with it. It’s so different to Madrid, more Bohemian in feel and more multi-cultural. The Gaud! architecture is so wonderfully whacky, looking half the time like it’s fallen off the page of a fairy tale. We were quite sorry to leave Barcelona.

After that we saw Valencia , but not for long unfortunately, and then we went on to
Granada. What a beautiful, beautiful place. There is nothing quite like the Moorish palace,
the Alhambra, lit up at night. The image has stayed with me.

We had wanted to visit Seville and the Extremadura region of the country, but we’d run out of money by then so sadly we had to leave.

It was a memorable holiday because I was with two good friends experiencing all these
amazi ng cities. I don’t think I could do it now, because travelling so much in a relatively
short time is tiring, but we were young and carefree and so took it in our stride. It was the
holiday of a lifetime.

– Why did you choose to go to Spain?

– Well, one of my friends spoke Spanish really well so it seemed the obvious choice. I don’t like going to a country without speaking any of the language. And my friend taught us both Spanish as we travelled round the country so by the end we could order our food ourselves and talk to people, albeit not on any complex subjects.

– I’d like to talk bout a speical holiday I went on about two years ago. It was a learning holiday with my school.

Ten people from my class went to London in England and we went to take an English course at a university. It was about two years ago and it was in the summer. The course lasted for three weeks. We stayed in university halls and the beds were very uncomfortable.

We did lots of things. First of all, we studied very hard but we made lots of new friends. At the weekends, we went sightseeing and we visited tourist attractions. There are lots of beautiful places in London. I really enjoyed visiting the historical sites and going to the art galleries. We learnt new sports in the evenings. For example, we played cricket and rugby. Another thing we did was go on a day trip to Stratford to see a play by Shakespeare. It was a beaufitul city but I didn’t understand the play. We had an exam on the last day and thankfully I passded.

Finally, it’s a special holiday because it was the first time I went on holiday without my family. It was also the first time I visited England and practised my English. It was very exciting.

– Are you going to go on a similar trip in the future?

– Yes, I’m going to do a language programme next year. I’m going to America and I’m going to work in a school for work experience.

Holiday

VD1: I would like to talk about a holiday I went on in the south of Vietnam just a few months ago.

I went with my parents to a town called Nha Trang, which is a lovely coastal town, and we decided to go there so that they could experience a different part of the country and see life by the beach.

We flew there from Hanoi, which is the capital of Vietnam. The flight took about 1 hour and on the whole it went smoothly. We managed to be one of the first on board and one of the first off when we landed. It was certainly quicker and easier than going by train, which can take over 15 hours.

There was so much to do there that we only had a chance to do just a few things on our three-day trip.

We took a cruise around the islands and also did some sightseeing inland as well. Taking part in a cookery course was great fun, where we bought fresh ingredients at the local market and learned how to use a wok to fry fresh fish and other seafood like crab and lobster.

We definitely enjoyed our trip and would go there again if we could. Seeing the colourful lifestyle of the locals and having a chance to see spectacular scenery was something we will never forget. For my parents it was a holiday of a life time and they’re still talking about it. If I could live there, I would.

VD2: I’d like to talk about a holiday that I took to the south coast of England just two months ago.

I went to a small village in a coastal region called Cornwall. It’s really well known for its dramatic coastal scenes, stunning landscape and also for its tasty food.

I went with my parents who had never been to this area of England before. They’d always wanted to go but just never had the chance because of work commitments. Anyway, Cornwall is quite far from where we live so we decided that it would be better to fly there rather than take the car. The roads and traffic are notoriously bad in that part of England.

On our arrival, when we found got to the little village, we found our way to the cottage we had booked which overlooked the sea.

I can’t tell you how gorgeous it was there. It ‘was just lovely. The windows of my room overlooked a little harbour and I could see all the boats coming in and out and all the seagulls flying around.

We spent most of our holiday sightseeing.

We visited all the local towns and villages and tried most of the local delicacies such as fresh crab and lobster. My father is a keen fisherman so he did a bit of fishing while my mother and I relaxed in little cafés somewhere just chatting with locals. It was so relaxing.

I think the thing I’ll remember most about the holiday, will be just how friendly and welcoming all the locals were.

It felt like home from home. By the time we’d finished the two week holiday, we had made loads of friends and I’m sure we’ll all keep in touch. If I ever get the chance to go back, I’d love to go and possibly stay longer, maybe for a few months. There’s still so much of the countryside that we didn’t explore, so there’ll still be plenty to see when we return.
